We made it! We departed IAH on Friday at 3:40pm for a 4hr flight to LAX, had a 5hr layover, then hopped onto the V Australia disco plane for our 14hr flight to Brisbane. I call it a disco plane because a)
They were jamming Kings of Leon as we boarded, b) There is disco lighting in the cabin (aka red fade to blue fade to yellow and so on), c) There is a bar on the plane, and d) The air stewardesses were all super-hot Aussies dressed in semi-inappropriately tight clothes. Oh, and they serve meals in Tiffany Blue serviceware. Branson and I are totally on the same wavelength.
No kidding though: as we landed and were debarking the plane they were playing "Lucky" by Jason Mraz + Colbie Caillat... which is what Tasha and Sterling sang as I walked down the aisle a couple of weeks ago. Crazy!
After almost 24 hours of traveling we arrived in Brisbane at 6:30am, grabbed a car and drove about an hour South of Brisbane to Gold Coast/Surfer's Paradise. Yesterday we met a Canadian named Lenny (female, yes) and her boyfriend Matt (from NYC) at the pool. They both came to Gold Coast for a semester abroad at Bond University... and they just stayed. Classic Aussie-hippie.
We're still substantially jetlagged. We woke up this morning at 5am... but it turned out pretty neat because we got to see the sunrise then we went for another run on the beach and had brekkie (breakfast) on the balcony overlooking the water. Our hotel is in the middle of the most amazing part of the town. I absolutely love this place. And Kevin's only tried to kill us one time by going the wrong way down the road...
That's it! We'll be here in GC working on our tans for the next couple days. Then on to Byron Bay.
Funny things Aussies do:
- Put "O's" at the end of normal words, thereby Aussie-fying them. For example "bottle-o", a liquor shop
- Drive hatchbacks
- Charge more for Yellowtail than they do in the States
- Use the word "sick" to describe anything even remotely cool
